An extremely important message
As an author of software, please bear in mind that you (or your mental abilities) are not immortal. If you want your legacy to live on, you should take a number of steps to keep your software useful and used. Pick a 'minder' for your source code, tools and code. Make sure your web hoster is paid by them. Make sure your web domain is paid by them. On your web site (for both downloadable software and on-line web applications) make sure version numbers are clear and up to date. List what programming language and version number are used. Do likewise for the application development environment. List any other conditional code modules that are required and their version numbers. You can also Open Source your code and/or you can run it as a group project so that others can continue development. Comment your source code methodically! Once you have gone (SK or left the hobby) that's it! Please think about it. Some users would love to use your code into the future. If some of your software is $hareware, you might consider it being free when you 'leave' or make sure that any registration works and feeds money solely to keeping your web domain and site running. The authors of some extremely good applications have left us, such as 9A5K, AB5K, PC5M, EA1AUS, G4ILO, G4FON, etc.
